Mauritius

Mauritius has a small but emerging wine industry, primarily focused on producing wines from the local climate and terroir. The island's warm, tropical climate and volcanic soils offer unique growing conditions, with limited but promising vineyard areas. While historically the region was more known for sugarcane production, wine is gaining a modest presence, and local wineries are experimenting with a variety of grapes. However, due to the island's size and limited land available for viticulture, most of the wine production on Mauritius remains small scale. One important note for wine buyers is to be cautious about wines sold under the Oxenham label, as these wines are produced from imported grape concentrate rather than locally grown grapes. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the use of concentrate, it is important for consumers to be informed that these wines do not reflect the true terroir of Mauritius. Transparency regarding the use of concentrate should be made clear to ensure consumers understand the origins of the product.
