Austria
Austrian wines have solidified their unique identity, emphasizing origin over grape variety. The gradual adoption of the Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) system has expanded appellations over recent decades, focusing on regional typicity. Austria's commitment to quality, precise winemaking, and innovative styles has set a benchmark for Central and Eastern European wine markets. In the mid-1980s, Austria faced a significant wine adulteration scandal involving diethylene glycol. In response, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board was established in 1986 to restore the industry's reputation. Subsequently, the Austrian Wine Academy (Weinakademie Österreich) was founded to further education and quality standards. The introduction of the DAC system marked a pivotal step in defining the typicity of specific growing regions. As of February 2022, 17 winegrowing regions have been designated as DACs, underscoring Austria's dedication to producing high-quality wines with a strong sense of place.
