Myanmar (Burma)

Myanmar's winemaking history began with Myanmar Vineyard Estate, founded in 1999 by German entrepreneur Bert Morsbach. Situated on the slopes of Taunggyi Mountain at an altitude of 1,200 meters in Shan State, the vineyard is located near Lake Inle, a major tourist attraction. Initially, Morsbach planted the vines himself, but now a significant portion of the grapes is sourced from contract farmers in three different regions with varied climates and elevations. The vineyard spans just over 26 hectares. After experimenting with numerous grape varieties, the core varieties for the Aythaya label include Shiraz, Dornfelder, and Tempranillo for red wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Sémillon for whites, and Red Muscat for dessert wine. The annual grape crush is approximately 200 tonnes.
