Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's warm, tropical climate poses challenges for traditional viticulture. However, certain grape varieties such as Cardinal and Black Muscat, typically grown for table consumption, have begun to attract attention from small-scale winemakers. These varieties are primarily cultivated in the country's inland regions, where attempts to adapt to local conditions have been made. The country currently has a handful of fledgling wineries, some of which produce wine from imported grape must and concentrates, alongside local fruit such as grapes and other tropical fruits. These ventures, though still in their infancy, are starting to experiment with different winemaking methods, including the use of hybrid varieties and non-traditional techniques suited to the island's climate. With time, the number of wineries is expected to grow as more interest develops in producing wine locally. Two companies are currently licensed to produce wine in Sri Lanka, marking the early steps of a potential wine industry. These wineries focus on small-scale production and exploration of both local and imported raw materials, with wine styles ranging from fruit-based wines to those made from grape varieties like Cardinal.
