Tajikistan

Tajikistan has a rich history of viticulture, with approximately 38,000 hectares of vineyards producing around 500,000 tons of grapes annually. In the 1980s, the country was a significant wine producer, creating up to 6 million decaliters (60,000 tons) of white wines like "Dushanbe" and "Pamir" and red wines such as "Vakhsh" and "Hissar". However, following the 1985 ban on dry wine production, the industry faced challenges, leading to a decline in production. Recent data indicates a decrease in vineyard area, with approximately 35,700 hectares under vines in 2022. Wine production has also declined, with reports of only 217 metric tons produced in 2018. This suggests a significant reduction from the past, where production was much higher. Despite these challenges, there is potential for revitalization. The country's favorable climate and soil conditions remain conducive to grape cultivation. With investment in modern winemaking techniques and infrastructure, Tajikistan could restore its position in the global wine industry.
