Canada

Canada's wine industry is both exciting and dynamic, with viticulture primarily concentrated in its southernmost regions. The country's vast geography offers a remarkable diversity of terroirs, contributing to the unique characteristics of Canadian wines. Winemaking in Canada has a history spanning over two centuries. A significant milestone occurred in 1975 when Inniskillin Wines, founded by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser in Niagara-on-the-Lake, was granted the first winery license in Ontario since Prohibition. This event marked a turning point in the nation's commitment to quality wine production. The 1980s were transformative for Canadian viticulture. In 1988, the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) was established in Ontario as a regulatory and appellation system to ensure the high quality and authenticity of origin for Canadian wines. This period also saw the implementation of vine-pulling and replacement programs, the emergence of pioneering winemakers, and the signing of significant trade agreements, all of which shaped the modern Canadian wine landscape.
