Ethiopia

Viticulture has a long history in Ethiopia, dating back many centuries. The country embraced Christianity in the 4th century, and locally produced Communion wine has been used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church since at least the 12th century. Grape growing is so deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture that it is reflected in the language. Ethiopians recognize three distinct climatic zones based on altitude: dega, kola, and waynadega.
