The 1855 Classification: Fifth Growth/Cinquième Grand Cru Classé
Château Dauzac has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was granted to Pétrus d'Auzac by Richard the Lionheart. By 1545, the estate was recognized as a vineyard by the Benedictine monks of Sainte-Croix Abbey. Over the centuries, it evolved under various prominent owners, including Pierre Drouillard, who elevated it to prominence in the Médoc, and his grandson, Jean-Baptiste Lynch, who maintained its prestige through political shifts.
The estate has been a hub of innovation. Alexis Millardet and Ernest David developed the Bordeaux mixture here, revolutionizing global viticulture. In the 20th century, Mr. Bernat introduced early thermoregulation techniques by using ice during fermentation.
Château Dauzac has seen a steady rise in quality since its acquisition by the French insurance group MAIF in 1989. Under the leadership of CEO Laurent Fortin, the estate has embraced sustainable and biodynamic viticulture, incorporating local plants and eco-friendly practices.
This shift has included investments in gravity-flow cellar in 2004 and introduced innovative fermentation methods, such as transparent wooden vats in 2014.
Château Dauzac has also focused on sustainability and authenticity, becoming the first Grand Cru Classé to produce 100% vegan wines and replanting ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon vines to preserve the original Médoc varietal flavor. In 2019, the Roulleau family acquired the estate, returning it to family ownership.
The estate spans 42 hectares of deep gravel soils, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (69%) and Merlot (29%), with a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Château Dauzac produces well-balanced, medium-bodied wines known for their vibrant fruitiness and supple tannins. The wines are matured in French oak barrels (60-66% new oak) for 12 to 18 months, with a focus on plot-by-plot selection to ensure quality.
